DIscovering System Dynamics Workshop

This workshop is our first workshop that focuses on developing essential systems thinking skills as applied to software engineering. (Contact us for information on how we can tailor this workshop to fit the specific needs of your software organization.)

This workshop is a "hands-on learning" workshop, with a substantial amount of time in group settings building diagrams and computer models that focus on system dynamics. As a participant:

  • You first receive an overview of the systems thinking paradigm by discussing the systems view as applied to software organizations.
  • As part of understanding system dynamics and feedback, you will practice how to create causal loop diagrams of common real-world situations in software, and discuss how various systems archetypes apply in software engineering.
  • You will then examine and discuss the effects of non-linear dynamics, and work with computer models to understand system performance and behavior.
  • You will examine a basic "software project management simulator" and work to build your own simple simulators in class, discussing your results with others in the class.
  • The class concludes with discussing how such simulators can be used to create learning environments for others in your software organization.

Each participant will receive a copy of the instructor's book Discovering System Dynamics in Software Engineering. Participants will be using a 30-day trial version of the i-think modeling software program. Also, each participant will receive the instructor's "Software Project Management Simulator," along with a booklet on how to modify and use the simulator in their organization for training people in software project management.
